Previously, in January 2023, the Vietnam Road Department announced the temporary suspension of toll collection for the BOT Highway 51 project. After that, the investor also stopped maintenance, so Highway 51 deteriorated more and more seriously. Especially after heavy rains, many "potholes and buffalo holes" appear on the road.

In mid-2025, Dong Nai Provincial People's Committee will take over 4 National Highways 1, 20, 51 and 56. According to statistics, from the beginning of 2026 until now, National Highway 51 through Dong Nai province has had 13 accidents, killing 12 people and injuring 3 people.

According to the Department of Construction of Dong Nai province, every day Highway 51 has more than 60,000 vehicles circulating. Overcrowding, degraded roads, many road sections with bumps, potholes, and potholes are potentially dangerous for road users.

The National Highway 51 repair project started in mid-March 2026 and is expected to be completed in July 2026.

The Department of Construction has directed contractors to carry out construction during the day and at night, ensuring traffic safety and shortening progress.
